Shaw Avenue School
Shaw Avenue Elementary School opened in 1950 as the second school in Valley Stream District 30, replacing the Rottkamp Potato Farm. For its 50th anniversary in 2000, students, staff, and families placed two time capsules in the Library Media Center to be opened in 2050 unveiled during Shaw Avenue’s 100th anniversary. Today, Shaw serves a diverse K–6 student body in the northern region. Students receive a strong foundation academically, socially, and emotionally. Instruction is differentiated to meet learning styles using varied strategies. Our core program emphasizes literacy through Common Core-aligned instruction, focusing on phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. In math, students apply real-world reasoning and problem-solving. Science and social studies foster inquiry and literacy integration. Students also grow through music, art, technology, and SEL. Enrichment includes tech labs, full-day kindergarten, co-teaching, QUEST, and afterschool supports.
