Literacy – Reading Skills
Skills
- Learn early concepts about print: book orientation and directionality
- Learn to read by thinking about letters
- Strengthen phonological awareness and oral language development
- Be immersed in story structure through high interest teacher read alouds
- Participate in both private and partner reading experiences
- Expected Reading Level: AA
Fundations/Phonics Skills
- Identify all 26 letters and their sounds

Literacy – Writing Skills
Skills
- Become accustomed to rules and routines for writing workshops
- Generate ideas both independently and with teacher support
- Learn how to tell stories orally, through pictures, and then through words.
- Label objects on pages of a writing piece
- Begin writing phrases and simple sentences
- Use familiar texts to model good writing and make reading/writing connections

Standards Based Report Cards
** Students are assessed based upon their performance in a given marking period. **
Level 1 or “Below Standards”
means your child seldom meets requirements for grade-appropriate work, demonstrates minimal understanding of learned concepts and skills, and assistance is necessary to produce work.
Level 2 or “Working towards Standards”
means your child meets some requirements for grade appropriate work, is beginning to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of learned concepts and skills, and produces quality work inconsistently.
Level 3 or “Meeting Standards”
means your child meets requirements for grade-appropriate work, demonstrates knowledge and understanding of learned concepts and skills, and produces quality work.
Level 4 or “Exceeding Standards”
is achievable but may be harder to come by. Your child can achieve this level by consistently demonstrating their ability to: Meets requirements and exceed expectations for gradeappropriate work, which is demonstrated through their ability to apply and discuss these concepts.
