Ms. Yochai's second graders became young entomologists as they worked in insect clubs to research different types of insects and discover fascinating facts about their chosen species. Each club collaborated to develop a "big idea" about their insect and used evidence from their research to explain their thinking and reasoning. From learning about amazing adaptations to uncovering unique insect behaviors, students had a blast exploring the insect world while practicing teamwork, critical thinking, and communication skills. Studying bugs with friends made learning even more exciting and fun!

Mrs. Belmonte's Pre-K class is counting down the final 18 days of Pre-K with an exciting balloon pop to represent each day being over! Each morning, the class pops one balloon. It is a highly engaging, visual way for little learners to celebrate their growth, build math skills, and make lasting memories together before summer.

Students in Ms. Munford's class enjoyed a special picnic snack outside as a reward for their outstanding behavior, positive attitudes, and consistently making great choices throughout the school day. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to celebrate their hard work, enjoy time together outdoors, and recognize the importance of demonstrating our Shaw expectations each day. We are so proud of their efforts and the positive example they set for others.

Mrs. Forcina’s, Mrs. Belmonte’s and Ms. Sinclair’s Pre-K classes are having a blast during the first week of our Countdown to Summer! The Pre-K students have been celebrating fun-themed days that are bringing smiles, excitement, and creating special memories.  So far, the students have enjoyed wearing hats to school on Hat Day, listening to stories outside while we wear our favorite sunglasses, sipping refreshing lemonade during Lemonade Day, and showing off our favorite character shirts on Character Shirt Day. These engaging activities are helping students celebrate all of the learning, friendships, and growth they have shared this year as they count down to summer vacation! Stay tuned to see what they have in store for next week!

Mrs. Iadevaio's 2nd grade students learned about the United States turning 250 years old. The students gained knowledge about how America became a country, important American symbols, famous Americans who helped build our country, and well known places such as the Statue of Liberty.

Mrs. Belmonte's Pre-K Class celebrated Flag Day, June 14th! They learned about the American flag by reading stories, singing patriotic songs, practicing identifying red, white, and blue, and even made our very own flags to take home. We talked about how the stars and stripes are special symbols for our country!

Shaw Avenue Elementary School welcomed the Valley Stream Global Leader Advocates, who led an engaging and inspiring Student Voice Symposium for our 5th and 6th grade students. The symposium provided students with a meaningful opportunity to share their ideas, perspectives, and experiences while participating in thoughtful discussions about their school community and learning experiences.

Using their iPads and the interactive platform Padlet, students shared their ideas, responded to thought-provoking prompts, and participated in meaningful discussions that elevated student voice and perspective. Throughout the symposium, our Shaw students showcased leadership, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration as they reflected on their experiences and explored ways to positively impact their school community. We are incredibly proud of the confidence, insight, and enthusiasm they demonstrated while engaging in this important learning experience.

A special thank you to the Valley Stream Global Leader Advocates for facilitating this memorable experience and empowering our students to use their voices as the Global Leaders of Tomorrow!
