Thirty Valley Stream 30 sixth grade students learned firsthand what is involved in the medical field by attending the inaugural Black Men in White Coats Youth Summit at Stony Brook University on Nov. 16.
Prior, all sixth grade students took part in the Career Key on the Naviance platform, an online career assessment for middle and high school students. Based upon the results, Sue Galgano, the districtwide enrichment teacher who facilitated the Career Key, compiled a list of all of the students who were identified as having an interest in the medical field. This list was then shared with the sixth grade teachers and they were asked to recommend three students from each class to attend the summit.
During the event, the sixth graders participated in two hands-on activities with Stony Brook medical school students. Activities included, mindfulness, surgeon techniques, administering an eye exam, administering CPR, use of a sonogram and conducting a physical exam. Afterward, students and staff were treated to lunch from the university.
Galgano, along with four STEAM aides, were chaperones and were joined by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roxanne Garcia-France, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Jennifer Lewner and Clear Stream school nurse Jeanine Wiese.
The district plans to make this a part of the sixth grade enrichment curriculum moving forward; another unique, hands-on learning experience for the Global Leaders of Tomorrow.
