A student at Shaw Avenue School in Valley Stream District 30 is leading an important zero waste initiative among his peers as part of a larger district-wide effort.

Jowell Melgar is a fifth grade representative in Valley Stream 30's Global Leaders of Tomorrow Advisory Council. On the council, students from all three schools meet regularly to discuss ways they can help their community, with this year’s mission being zero hunger.

Jowell communicated the importance of the council’s mission to Shaw Avenue students and explained that a box would be placed outside of the lunchroom for students to place their unwanted but unopened and unused items in. The food placed in the box is available to any students who are in need of a snack.
