Students in Julie Ballantyne and Jennifer Simon’s 6th grade class at Shaw Avenue Elementary School in the Valley Stream District 30 have been partaking in an intense March Madness competition in which persuasive writing is the name of the game.

Each student wrote an essay arguing why their March Madness team should make it to the top. Each team faces off in brackets, and the students’ name is not attached to the essay, allowing their persuasive writing to earn the reader’s vote to proceed. Students’ teams will continue to compete throughout the month.
