Literacy

  • Bookpals 
    • This site produced by the Screen Actors Guild presents streaming videos of of books being read to students by famous actors. Each book presented includes a book summary, several age appropriate activities, information about the author, and information about the reader. Teachers can also download a complete lesson plan to use with the book.   • Scrambled Stories
    • This site has several familiar stories that children can read, have read to them, and interact with while they practice recognizing different parts of speech. The graphics in the story change with student input and the completed story can be printed out.
  • School- Home Links    
    • This site has more than 100 School-Home Links activities for grades K, 1, 2, and 3. The activities are organized by reading and literacy skills appropriate to each grade. Under each specific skill, there are varying numbers of activities to help children develop their ability to read and write.
  • Arthur's Games    
    • Children try to make 4 matches before Buster the rabbit. Students identify flags, musical instruments, and sports in a card game. Buster reads each card aloud to students.
  • Alphabet Soup  
    • Students unscramble letters in Alphabet Soup. They must discover the word that fits the context of a given sentence. This is a challenging activity that has students practice their spelling skills.
       

Internet Research Skills

    • How to Search for Information on the Internet. This site provides a great tutorial on Keyword Searches. This page allows students to do Keyword Searches using 5 different child safe search engines. The site also has links to tutorials on advanced search strategies.

 

Reasoning and Memory Skills

  • The Cat's Concentration Game  
    • Two levels of play. Students match Dr. Seuss characters to their books (requires Macromedia Shockwave). Be patient, this page takes a long time to load!
  • Arthur's Story Scramble  
    • Students practice sequencing skills on this page. Students read the words or click on each speaker to hear them. They use their mouse to move the pictures into the proper order. When they are finished they click on 'Read it' to hear the story.

Grammar

  • Grammar Rules
    • This page allows students to look up grammar rules, helper words, and other writing tips by selecting a heading: Sentences, Paragraphs, and Essays.
  • Proof Reading Skills  
    • This site from Houghton Mifflin provides students with interactive practice of proofreading skills presented by grade level and skill.
  • What's the Word?
    • A reading and vocabulary game. Students use picture clues to recognize to identify unfamiliar words. Topics include alphabet (Easy) animals, fruit, tools, machines, and shapes.
  • Alphabetizing
    • Online interactive Practice Alphabetizing words in sets of 4, two levels. Also on the same page students can find word definitions of the words.
  • Grammar Gorillas
    • Grammar Gorillas- Online interactive practice. The beginner level practices nouns and verbs only.
