SCHOOL CLOSINGS & DELAYS

The fall and winter months can bring unpredictable weather, and we want to make sure every family knows what to expect when that happens. Valley Stream District 30 follows clear procedures for delayed openings and school closings so that families have the information they need to plan their day and keep students safe. When the weather forces a change to the school schedule, families can count on the district and school leaders to:

  • COMMUNICATE QUICKLY: Announcements will be shared through ParentSquare, our website, and local news stations as soon as a decision is made.
  • KEEP FAMILIES INFORMED: We’ll clearly explain what the change means for your child’s start time, meals, transportation, and learning schedule.
  • PROTECT LEARNING TIME: If a closure is needed, we’ll let you know whether instruction will move to a remote format.
  • PLAN RESPONSIBLY: The district monitors the number of snow days and adjusts if we approach the state’s 180-day requirement for instruction.

Our goal is to make these decisions with safety, learning, and family needs in mind so that everyone knows what to expect on a weather day.

DELAYED OPENING

If the weather is poor early in the morning but is expected to improve, the district may announce a delayed opening. On these days, students should arrive at school by 10:15 a.m.

Notifications will be shared by 6:00 a.m. through:

This gives families time to safely prepare for the school day.

SCHOOL CLOSING AFTER A DELAY

If conditions worsen after a delayed opening is announced, the district may decide to close schools for the day. A second message will be sent by 7:30 a.m. to notify families.

Updates will be shared through the same channels:

  • ParentSquare
  • Local radio stations
  • News 12 Long Island
  • The district website

FULL-DAY CLOSURES

  • When forecasts show hazardous conditions throughout the day, schools will be closed for the full day.
  • The district monitors snow days carefully to ensure that we meet the 180-day instructional requirement. I
  • f the four allocated snow days are used, we may need to shift to remote instruction or use recess days (holiday, winter, or spring) to make up instructional time.

WE KNOW WEATHER CHANGES CAN BE STRESSFUL FOR FAMILIES.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR FLEXIBILITY AND UNDERSTANDING AS WE MAKE THESE DECISIONS WITH STUDENT SAFETY, LEARNING, AND FAMILY NEEDS AS OUR TOP PRIORITIES.
