The Shaw Avenue Elementary School community in Valley Stream District 30 gathered in celebration on the night of Oct. 15 to embrace their Hispanic culture during a special Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.

Seats were filled in the auditorium and the gymnasium was packed as dozens of families attended for a night of fun. Following District 30’s theme for this year, “Lights, Camera, Action!” both students and special performers put on a show for guests, and families also had an opportunity to show off their cultural backgrounds. Community members took a tour of personal museums set up by Shaw families in the gymnasium which featured cultural artifacts and trivia on a wide range of Hispanic countries and cultures. All eyes turned to two Mariachi performers who serenaded families with Spanish songs and got students practicing traditional dances.

In the auditorium, first and second grade students performed for loved ones in musical performances highlighting the importance of sharing our cultural backgrounds.

The night was coordinated by the Shaw Avenue PTA, who dressed for the occasion and served Hispanic baked treats as families entered the school.
