Stonewall Jackson

Stonewall Jackson was born on January 21, 1824 to the parents of Jonathan Jackson and Julia Beckwith Neale. He was not the only child. He had three other siblings. Here are the children in age order Elizabeth (1819-1826); Warren (1821-1841); Thomas (1824-1863); and Laura Ann (1826-1911). In March of 1826 Jackson's sister and his father both died of typhoid fever. The day after his father died Julia (Jackson's mom) gave birth to Laura Ann Jackson. Stonewall Jackson was not born with the name Stonewall. His name is really Thomas Jonathan Jackson. He got the name Stonewall because of his steadfastness. It was given to him on the First Manassas, by a letter writer. Stonewall Jackson had a horse with the name of "Little Sorrel". The horse died on March 1886 at the age of 36. So that means Stonewall's horse died after Stonewall died. In April of 1861 Jackson volunteered to serve his state. He formed a group of amateur soldiers into an army brigade. In 1862 Jackson fought at the Second Battle of Manassas, the siege of Harper's Ferry, the Battle of Antietam, and the Battle of Fredericksburg. He was wounded in May of 1863 while he was pursuing Joseph Hooker at the Battle of Chancellorsville. General Jackson died a week later from pneumonia. General Jackson's last words were "Let us cross over the river and rest under the shade of the trees." "I have lost my right arm."
