Ulysses
S. Grant was a General for the Union army during the Civil War.
He was born in Point Pleasant Ohio, on April 27th, 1822 to a middle
class family. He went to West Point against his will. He graduated
in 1843 ranking 21st out of 39 graduating students from West Point.
Five years after he graduated he got married to Julia Boggs Dent.
Ulysses and his wife later had four children. Ulysses was placed in command of the Union
Armies by Abraham Lincoln at the time of the Civil War. He won
eleven battles. After the war, Ulysses was elected as the 18th
president of the United States in 1868. He was in office from
1869-1877. During
his last years he became very poor due to bad investments. He
decided to write memoirs about his life. After he died his family
sold his book to pay off his debts.
