Lincoln was born on February 12,
1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky. Lincoln is known best for his
stand against slavery. He was the 16th president of the United
States. Lincoln led the country through the Civil War. One of
his most famous speeches was the Gettysburg Address. It was written
and given by Abraham Lincoln, on November 19, 1863, in Gettysburg
Pennsylvania at Gettysburg National Cemetery. Abraham Lincoln
presented the address in honor of the people who had died in the
Civil War. The lines of the Address have been quoted many times.
The lines were even carved on the walls in Lincoln's memorial:
"We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died
in vain --that this nation, under God shall have a new birth of
freedom--and the government of people by the people for the people
shall not perish from the earth." Sadly on April 15, 1865,
Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford's Theater
in Washington D.C.
