Fort Sumter

In 1829 fort Sumter was built. Fort Sumter was named after General Thomas Sumter. December 1860 South Carolina demanded all federal property within the state, especially Charleston Harbor, Fort Moultrie and Castle Pinckney. The first battle of the Civil War took place at Fort Sumter on April 12 and 13th 1861. After fighting for 34 hours the union surrender the fort to the confederates. Fort Sumter was surrounded and blocked by union forces for 22 months. At this time Fort Sumter was reduced to brick rubble. In 1948 Fort Sumter became a national monument.
