Shaw Avenue School
The school serving the northern part of District 30 is the Shaw Avenue Elementary School, which houses approximately 660 students in grades kindergarten through six.
Shaw Avenue is proud of its new addition, which houses state-of-the-art library, art, and music rooms. Students have the ability to enhance their skills in the arts using the new facilities.
Shaw Avenue is the recipient of a grant, “Jazz Sampler” from Friends of the Arts (FOTA), a nonprofit organization funded through the National Endowment for the Arts, which is dedicated to providing students with experiences in the arts, namely jazz. Students work with artists-in-residence in the areas of dance and song writing. At the conclusion of the residencies, students perform and display their creative artistic endeavors with the school community. Through the collaborative efforts of the Shaw Avenue PTA, professional performances are brought to the school, to complement the “Jazz Sampler” grant.
Shaw Avenue is proud to be a part of a cohort of schools participating in Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a proactive behavior support system that helps children to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Children are rewarded for positive behaviors and acknowledged for doing the “right thing.”
Shaw Avenue School also provides children with a richly rewarding educational experience in the areas of art, music, and computer technology. Academic excellence is expected of all students as they forge ahead in their academic pursuits.
Everyone in Shaw Avenue knows that, “The sun always shines in Shaw Avenue.”
