Board of Education

About the Board

Valley Stream Union Free School District 30 is governed by a Board of Education comprised of five community members. An individual who sits on the Board of Education is responsible for setting the policy under which the schools operate. Each Board member must be a member of the community. Board members are elected to serve for five year terms of office.

The Board of Education usually meets twice monthly. Each of these meetings is open to the public. The first of these meetings is a meeting of the Committee of The Whole. This is a Board work session open to the public. The second meeting is the regularly scheduled Board of Education meeting.

The Committee meeting is usually held on the next to the last Monday of the month, while the official Board meeting is usually held on the last Monday of the month at 8:00 p.m. at the Shaw Avenue School.

Goals

The development and maintenance of optimal educational programs are the primary functions of the Valley Stream District 30 Board of Education. The Board's instruction goals for District students include the following:

  • to provide each child with fundamental academic skills and knowledge for his/her maximum educational advancement
  • to structure a spirit of inquiry which capitalizes on students' innate curiosity, and reveals to them the excitement found in the search for knowledge
  • to develop in the students a sense of self-worth that will enable them, with the necessary guidance, to recognize and use their own capabilities
  • to provide each student with the greatest possible opportunity to use his/her abilities and interests in order to find satisfaction and a sense of purpose in life
  • to promote the ability to think critically and logically, to use knowledge constructively, and to attack problems intelligently, giving due respect to honest differences of opinion
  • to nurture and develop basic attitudes, such as good work habits, self discipline, respect for authority, and sense of responsibility, cooperation, good sportsmanship and self confidence
  • to develop literacy and understanding in economic matters and encourage responsible consumer judgment
  • to provide special services which promote the physical, mental and emotional well-being of every child
  • to provide a well balanced extra curricular program designed to promote the intellectual, physical and social growth of students
  • to promote intelligent regard for and use of the nation's resources
  • to develop understanding of social structures and social processes
  • and to prepare youth for acceptance of civic responsibilities

High School Board Members

Valley Stream Union Free School District 30 is an elementary school district serving children in grades kindergarten through six. As such, the District is a component of The Valley Stream Central High School District. The responsibility to govern the Central High School District falls to members of the three component elementary school Districts, Valley Stream District 30, Valley Stream District 13 and Valley Stream District 24. The three individuals who also serve the High School Board of Education, representing District 30 are:
