      <title>Shaw Spotlight</title>
<description>The hallways at Shaw Avenue continue to bustle with activities. Below are some highlights of what has been taking place:

Shaw Avenue students enjoyed participating this year's two-week Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) program. This year's theme was &amp;quot;Spring into Reading&amp;quot; and during which encouraged students participated in a variety of activities, including DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time, at which time students and staff were asked to stop what they were doing and read for 15 minutes. The program concluded with the announcement of the results from the Administrator's Challenge, which urged the students of Shaw Avenue read for a total of 150,000 minutes. With much success the school reached this goal and, as a reward, School Principal Ms. Hudson dressed as a clown for the day.

Shaw students have continued to make cards for the soldiers overseas. The finished cards are delivered monthly to an organization called Jacob's Light Foundation, which sends care packages to the military, including the handmade cards.

Shaw Avenue students are also working to &amp;quot;go green&amp;quot; through a schoolwide recycling project. The students have been recycling plastic, paper, and cardboard, and with the help of Royal Recycling Solutions have recycled collected 2.68 tons of materials over a three month span. As a result, the students have helped save 40 trees, 21.44 cubic feet of landfills, and 18,760 gallons of water.

In recognition of autism awareness month, the school's students were visited by Dr. Lewis Jassey, a pediatrician from Bellmore. During his visit, Dr. Jassey performed as his &amp;quot;alter ego&amp;quot; Doc. J - a rapper that shares his talent with students by rapping about people/children who have touched his life.

      <title>Giving All Year Long</title>
<description>The students at Forest Road School have been learning about the Character Trait of Empathy as part of their schoolwide Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support (PBIS) program. As the oldest children in the school, and the graduating class of 2010, the building&amp;amp;rsquo;s sixth-grade students have kicked off a schoolwide campaign that is centered on this very topic. The students have decided to turn learning into living by undertaking a social action project with a long-lasting goal. Rather than begin a food drive just for a holiday, these children have realized that due to our country's current economic woes, many more families than ever before are in need of some basics year round. As such, they have decided to create Forest Road Lends a Hand, a program that will gather, organize and donate food items to local food pantries for distribution for the entirety of the school year.&amp;amp;nbsp; Keep on the alert for the school&amp;amp;rsquo;s advertisements as they work to collect specific food items each month!&amp;amp;nbsp; If you are interested in donating, please contact the school at 791-6134. &amp;amp;nbsp;</description>

      <title>Multicultural Celebrations at Shaw </title>
<description>Shaw Avenue School&amp;rsquo;s third graders went on a whirlwind tour this December holiday season when they researched and shared how their families celebrate different holidays. The students completed a survey with the help of their parents and learned about their own unique family customs and traditions.
After they compiled their research, the students drafted beautiful essays titled &amp;quot;Home for the Holidays&amp;quot;. They are decorating their essays with cover pages resembling their own homes. After completing their projects, the students shared their essays with classmates and learned that although they may celebrate differently, they have many traditions in common. The project was a great way to celebrate the holiday season and further the students&amp;rsquo; understanding and appreciation of a variety of cultures.
Additionally, during the week of December 14th, the third graders coordinated a &amp;quot;Secret Pal&amp;quot; week. The students exchanged favorite books, and handmade treats and trinkets in the spirit of the season. They were especially eager to reveal their secret pal identity in letters to their classmates.

      <title>Spirited Celebration at CSA</title>
<description>Clear Stream Avenue School recently celebrated School Spirit Week by coordinating several theme days, including sports day, professional day, wacky Wednesday, pajama day, and school colors day, and focusing their attention on how one&amp;rsquo;s character traits can increase the building&amp;rsquo;s school spirit.
As a culmination to the weeklong celebration, the student-body gathered together for an assembly program they called &amp;ldquo; What Clear Stream Means to Me.&amp;rdquo; During the program, the students shared individual and group projects they created on the topic. Projects ranged from songs, raps, poems, and artistic creations.
In addition to sharing the projects, the students continued their character education lessons on the school&amp;rsquo;s PBIS theme, &amp;ldquo;Tolerance.&amp;rdquo; The students enjoyed sharing their thoughts on the subject and reading the book Terrible Things by Eve Bunting aloud in their classroom. The messages included in the book were linked to the theme of tolerance.
